Josephine Tey was the pseudonym of Elizabeth Mackintosh, a Scottish writer who also published under the name Gordon Daviot.
Born in Inverness, she studied physical training during World War I and later cared for her invalid father before turning to writing.
She created the beloved Scotland Yard Inspector Alan Grant across six mystery novels.
Alfred Hitchcock adapted her novel A Shilling for Candles, and other works were also filmed.
She never married and remained famously private, even among close friends.
She died at 55, and her final published novel, The Daughter of Time, was later voted the greatest mystery novel of all time.
