Caryl Phillips was born in St. Kitts and raised in Leeds, England, after moving to Britain at four months old.
He studied English Literature at Oxford and began his career writing for theatre and radio, winning a BBC Giles Cooper Award.
A prolific novelist and essayist, his works explore themes of migration, race, and identity.
His novel Crossing the River won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and was shortlisted for the 1993 Booker Prize.
Currently a Professor of English at Yale University, Phillips is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and has taught across four continents.
