Mária Szepes was born Magdolna Scherbach in Budapest into a theatrical family.
Her father was a renowned stage star and her mother a primadonna.
She worked as a film actress from 1916-1933, often as Magda Papir.
After marrying Béla Szepes in 1931, she moved to Berlin, where she studied literature, art history, and biology.
Returning to Hungary, she became a journalist, screenplay writer, and author.
She wrote The Red Lion in hiding during World War II; it became an esoteric literature bestseller worldwide.
Her 56-year marriage explored what she called "Alchemistic Marriage." She considered the two Raguel volumes her chief work.
