Christopher John "C.J." Sansom was an English crime novelist who earned a BA and PhD in history from the University of Birmingham.
After working various jobs and retraining as a solicitor for disadvantaged clients in Sussex, he became a full-time writer.
He gained prominence through his Matthew Shardlake series, featuring a hunchbacked lawyer in Henry VIII's reign.
His novel Dark Fire won the 2005 Ellis Peters Historical Dagger.
Sansom also wrote Winter in Madrid, set in post-Spanish Civil War Spain.
The Shardlake television adaptation premiered on Disney+ in May 2024, days after his death.
