Valerio Evangelisti was one of Italy's most important fantasy and horror writers.
Born in Bologna, he earned his Political Science degree in 1976 and worked academically and for Italy's Treasury Department until 1990.
Initially writing historical essays, he turned to fiction in 1993.
His debut novel won the prestigious Urania Award, launching the successful Nicolas Eymerich series featuring a historical Spanish Inquisition figure reimagined as a cruel, intelligent investigator.
His works, characterized by dark, nightmarish atmospheres and complex multi-timeline narratives, achieved international success, particularly in France, Spain, and Germany.
He also wrote the Magus trilogy, novels about American history, and pirate fiction.
