Winston Francis Groom Jr. was an American novelist and non-fiction writer born in Washington, D.C., who grew up in Mobile, Alabama.
He attended the University of Alabama, graduating in 1965, where he joined Delta Tau Delta and Army ROTC. Groom served in the Army from 1965 to 1969, including a Vietnam tour.
He's best known for his book Forrest Gump, adapted into the acclaimed 1994 film.
Later in life, Groom devoted himself to writing history books about American wars and resided in Point Clear, Alabama, and Long Island, New York.
