Nicholas Monsarrat was born in Liverpool and educated at Winchester and Trinity College, Cambridge.
Originally intending to practice law, he pivoted to writing and journalism.
Though a pacifist, he served with distinction in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve during WWII, commanding escort vessels protecting Atlantic convoys — experiences that directly shaped his masterwork, The Cruel Sea (1951).
After the war, he joined the diplomatic service, posted in South Africa and Canada before writing full-time.
His later novels drew on colonial Africa experiences.
The Cruel Sea remains his most celebrated and enduring work.
