Sharon Kay Penman earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Texas at Austin and a J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law, working initially as a tax lawyer.
Her novel The Sunne in Splendour about Richard III appears on the Historical Novel Society's best historical novels list.
After the 1996 success of When Christ and His Saints Slept, covering the Anarchy and Henry II's early career, she wrote four medieval mysteries before returning to straight historical fiction.
She completed a five-book series on Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, ending with The King's Ransom, featuring Richard the Lionheart.
Her most recent work explores the Kingdom of Jerusalem.
