Thomas Carlyle was a Scottish historian, critic, and sociological writer born in Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire.
Son of a stonemason, he received education grounded in mathematics, French, and Latin.
He attended Edinburgh University intending to become a minister but abandoned this path after theological disagreements.
Suffering from lifelong gastric ailments that influenced his philosophy, Carlyle became a tutor and scholar of German literature.
His early works included a biography of Schiller and a translation of Goethe's Wilhelm Meister.
He experienced a spiritual rebirth in 1821, described in Sartor Resartus, and later married Jane Baillie Welsh.
