Andrea Camilleri was an acclaimed Italian writer of the 20th and 21st centuries from Porto Empedocle, Sicily.
He studied film direction and worked extensively as a theater and TV director, including on RAI productions.
After early unsuccessful novels, his 1992 work became a bestseller.
In 1994, he created Inspector Montalbano, a Sicilian detective featured in a wildly popular series written in Italian with Sicilian dialect.
The character's name honors Spanish writer Manuel Vázquez Montalbán.
The TV adaptation starring Luca Zingaretti increased his fame so significantly that his hometown added "Vigàta" to its official name.
Over 10 million copies of his novels sold worldwide.
