Conceição Evaristo was born in a slum in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, where she balanced studies with domestic work before completing her early education at age 25.
She later moved to Rio de Janeiro, secured a teaching position, and earned a degree in Letters from UFRJ. In the 1980s, she joined Grupo Quilombhoje, debuting in literature in 1990 through Cadernos Negros.
Holding a Master's in Brazilian Literature from PUC-Rio and a PhD in Comparative Literature from UFF, her acclaimed works — including the 2003 novel Ponciá Vicêncio — explore racial, gender, and class discrimination.
She currently teaches at UFMG.
