Evelyn Waugh was born into a literary family, with both his father and brother being notable writers.
After an undistinguished time at Oxford, he taught school briefly before publishing his debut novel Decline and Fall in 1928.
His first marriage ended in divorce after his wife's infidelity, an experience that deeply influenced his writing, particularly A Handful of Dust.
He converted to Catholicism during his second, lasting marriage.
Throughout the 1930s he produced celebrated satirical works, later writing Brideshead Revisited, widely considered his masterpiece.
He died in 1966, regarded as the greatest satirical novelist of his era.
