Michel Pastoureau was born in Paris on June 17, 1947.
He studied at the École Nationale des Chartes and completed his 1972 thesis on heraldic bestiaries in the Middle Ages.
He worked at the French National Library's coins, medals, and antiquities department until 1982.
Since 1983, he has held the Chair of History of Western Symbolism at the Sorbonne's École pratique des hautes études.
An academician of the International Academy of Heraldry and vice-president of the French Heraldry Society, Pastoureau has published extensively on the history of colors, animals, symbols, heraldry, and medieval topics.
