Paul Anthony Cartledge is the A.G. Leventis Professor of Greek Culture at Cambridge University and a world-renowned expert on Athens and Sparta in the Classical Age.
He earned his doctorate in Spartan archaeology from Oxford in 1975 under Sir John Boardman, then joined Cambridge in 1979 as a fellow of Clare College.
Described as a Laconophile, Cartledge served as chief historical consultant for BBC's "The Greeks" and Channel 4's "The Spartans" series.
He holds Greece's Gold Cross of the Order of Honour, is an Honorary Citizen of modern Sparta, and maintains a visiting Global Distinguished Professorship at New York University funded by the Greek Parliament.
