In 2008, The Times named him among the "50 greatest British writers since 1945," and a 2004 BBC poll ranked him the eleventh most influential person in British culture.
Northern Lights, the trilogy's first volume, won the 1995 Carnegie Medal and was later voted all-time "Carnegie of Carnegies." The trilogy ranked third in the BBC's Big Read poll.
