Héctor Germán Oesterheld was born in Buenos Aires in 1919 and trained as a geologist before becoming Argentina's most influential comics writer.
Starting in 1950, he created iconic characters including Sargento Kirk and Mort Cinder, but El Eternauta became his defining masterpiece.
A fan of Melville and Conrad, Oesterheld infused his adventure stories with literary depth and political consciousness.
In the 1970s, he joined the Montoneros guerrilla organization.
On April 27, 1977, during Argentina's military dictatorship, he was kidnapped in La Plata and disappeared, likely murdered in Mercedes.
His four daughters were also disappeared, leaving only his widow surviving the regime's brutality.
