The book, which follows a woman's violent revenge against abusive men, caused a media storm and polarized critical reactions.
It became a bestseller, was translated into multiple languages, and adapted into a film.
Zahavi, a former Russian-English translator, co-wrote the screenplay.
The novel was shortlisted for the Whitbread First Novel Award.
Following her controversial debut, Zahavi wrote two more novels: True Romance (1994) and Donna And The Fatman (1998), both of which have been widely reviewed and translated.
