Hyman Philip Minsky (1919-1996) was an American economist who taught at Washington University in St. Louis and served as a distinguished scholar at the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College.
A post-Keynesian economist, he researched financial crises, attributing them to instability in the financial system.
Minsky supported government intervention in financial markets, opposed 1980s deregulation policies, and warned against excessive private debt accumulation.
He advocated for the Federal Reserve as lender of last resort.
His theories were largely overlooked until the 2008 subprime mortgage crisis sparked renewed interest in his work.
