Maya Angelou, cuyo nombre de nacimiento fue Marguerite Johnson, fue una destacada poeta estadounidense, escritora de memorias y activista por los derechos civiles.
Su novela autobiográfica I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1970) marcó el inicio de su carrera literaria y fue nominada al National Book Award.
Angelou escribió una serie de siete autobiografías, siendo Mom & Me & Mom su obra final.
Además, se desempeñó como actriz, directora y profesora.
