Staughton Lynd was born to prominent sociologists Robert and Helen Lynd in New York City.
He earned degrees from Harvard and Columbia, teaching at Spelman College alongside Howard Zinn and later at Yale.
In 1964, he directed Freedom Schools during Mississippi's Freedom Summer.
A vocal Vietnam War opponent, Lynd organized the first Washington DC antiwar march in 1965.
His controversial 1965 trip to Hanoi with Tom Hayden cost him his Yale position.
Moving to Chicago, he pursued community organizing and oral history work, earning a law degree in 1976.
He subsequently practiced as a labor attorney and activist in Ohio.
