Alain Robbe-Grillet was a French writer and filmmaker born in Brest in 1922, trained as an agricultural engineer before dedicating himself to literature.
He became a leading figure of the Nouveau Roman movement alongside Nathalie Sarraute, Michel Butor, and Claude Simon.
His first novel, The Erasers, appeared in 1953.
He worked as literary advisor for Les Editions de Minuit and collaborated with Alain Resnais on Last Year at Marienbad.
His writing style features methodical, geometric descriptions of objects that replace traditional character psychology, with fractured timelines and repetitive patterns.
He was elected to the Académie française in 2004 and died in Caen in 2008.
