Robin McKinley was born in Warren, Ohio, and grew up moving frequently as a Navy child, fostering her love of reading.
She tracked her life through books she read in different locations, from Lang's fairy tales in California to Tolkien in Japan.
After graduating summa cum laude from Bowdoin College in 1975, her first novel was published in 1978 at age twenty-six.
She has worked various jobs including bookstore clerk, barn manager, and teacher before becoming a full-time writer.
McKinley now lives in Hampshire, England, with her late husband Peter Dickinson and enjoys gardening, walking her dogs, and change ringing.
