Ignacio Manuel Altamirano was born in 1834 in Tixtla, Guerrero, to an indigenous family.
His father's position as alcalde in 1848 enabled fourteen-year-old Ignacio to attend school, where he learned to read and write.
He pursued studies in Toluca through a scholarship from Ignacio Ramírez, his mentor, and studied at the Instituto Literario de Toluca and law at Colegio de San Juan de Letrán.
Altamirano participated in numerous academic and literary societies including the Conservatorio Dramático Mexicano, Sociedad Nezahualcóyotl, and Liceo Hidalgo.
He died in Italy in 1893 while serving on a diplomatic mission.
