His journalism on anti-LGBTQIA+ campaigns in Russia and Uganda earned prestigious honors, including the National Magazine Award.
He has chaired the National Book Award's Nonfiction Panel and received MacDowell fellowships.
Currently the Frederick Sessions Beebe '35 Professor in the Art of Writing at Dartmouth College, he lives in Vermont.
