Scott Atran (born 1952) is an American and French anthropologist who serves as Director of Research in Anthropology at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris, Senior Research Fellow at Oxford University, and Presidential Scholar at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
He also holds a position at the University of Michigan.
Atran received his PhD in anthropology from Columbia University and worked as assistant to Margaret Mead at the American Museum of Natural History.
His research focuses on terrorism, violence, and religion, conducting extensive fieldwork with terrorists, Islamic fundamentalists, and political leaders globally.
