NoViolet Bulawayo, born Elizabeth Tshele, is a Zimbabwean author and Stanford University Stegner Fellow.
She gained recognition after winning the 2011 Caine Prize for African Writing for her short story "Hitting Budapest." Her debut novel, We Need New Names, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2013, making her the first African female writer to achieve this distinction.
The novel draws on her experiences growing up in Zimbabwe and immigrating to the United States.
Bulawayo's work explores themes of displacement, cultural identity, and the immigrant experience.
She is currently working on a memoir project.
