Despite avoiding school frequently, he secured a place at New College, Oxford to study English.
His varied career included working as a betting shop boardman, bank messenger, teacher, and senior film censor at the British Board of Film Classification.
His debut novel, The Wisdom of Crocodiles, took thirteen years to write and was partially adapted into a film starring Jude Law.
His second novel was a black comedy drawing on his censorship experiences.
He has also co-written three produced screenplays.
