Peter Matthiessen was a prolific and celebrated American writer, naturalist, explorer, and activist, authoring more than thirty books across fiction and nonfiction.
A co-founder of The Paris Review, he achieved the rare distinction of winning the National Book Award in both nonfiction, for The Snow Leopard in 1979 and 1980, and fiction, for Shadow Country in 2008.
Deeply committed to environmentalism and social justice, his work frequently explored humanity's relationship with the natural world and marginalized communities.
He was also an ordained Zen Buddhist priest.
Matthiessen passed away in April 2014 at the age of 86.
