Friedrich Bodmer (actual name Friedrich, though published as Frederick) was a Swiss-German linguist born in 1894 who died in 1960.
He taught at the University of Cape Town in South Africa and at MIT's Department of Modern Languages.
Though not a professional linguist by training, Bodmer was multilingual and wrote The Loom of Language in 1943 under the guidance of Lancelot Hogben.
His work aimed to help people communicate across languages to promote international understanding and prevent future wars following WWII. The book reflects his belief in practical language learning and linguistic accessibility for everyday learners.
