Gabrielle Roy was born in 1909 in Saint-Boniface, Manitoba, the youngest of eleven children.
Financial hardship prevented her from attending university despite exceptional academic achievement.
She trained as a teacher, working in rural Manitoba before returning to Saint-Boniface, where she also pursued acting with the Cercle Molière troupe.
Travels to Britain and France between 1937 and 1939 led her toward writing, contributing articles to newspapers in both Europe and Canada.
Her prolific literary career earned extraordinary recognition, including three Governor General's Awards, the Prix Fémina, the Companion of the Order of Canada, and several other prestigious honours.
