His travel writing brought him early acclaim, winning the prestigious Golden Laurels for I Have Seen the World Begin.
His literary stature was further cemented when We, the Drowned earned him the Danske Banks Litteraturpris, considered Denmark's most prestigious literary award.
The novel was also celebrated as the best Danish novel of the preceding twenty-five years.
