Saint John Henry Cardinal Newman was a pivotal figure in 19th-century English religious history.
Originally an evangelical Anglican priest and Oxford academic, he became a leader of the Oxford Movement, which sought to restore Catholic beliefs and rituals to the Church of England.
In 1845, he converted to Catholicism and was ordained a priest.
Pope Leo XIII made him a cardinal in 1879.
He was beatified in 2010 and canonised in 2019.
Beyond religion, Newman was a distinguished literary figure, authoring works such as Apologia Pro Vita Sua, The Dream of Gerontius, and beloved hymns including "Lead, Kindly Light.".
