Joseph O'Neill was born in Cork, Ireland, in 1964, and spent his formative years across several countries, including Mozambique, South Africa, Iran, Turkey, and Holland.
This peripatetic upbringing clearly informs his writing, lending it a distinctly international, outsider perspective.
Before Netherland, he authored two novels—This is the Life and The Breezes—as well as the critically acclaimed non-fiction work Blood-Dark Track, a family history exploring the wartime imprisonment of both his grandfathers, which was named an New York Times Notable Book.
O'Neill also contributes regularly to The Atlantic and currently resides in New York City with his family.
