Sindiwe Magona is a celebrated South African writer born in the former Transkei region.
She grew up in Bouvlei near Cape Town, working as a domestic worker while completing her secondary education by correspondence.
She later graduated from the University of South Africa and earned a Master of Science in Organisational Social Work from Columbia University.
Magona worked for the United Nations for over 20 years, retiring in 2003.
She has also pursued acting, notably voicing a character in the 2013 animated film Khumba.
Currently, she serves as Writer-in-Residence at the University of the Western Cape and has taught at Georgia State University.
