Kenneth Oppel was born in 1967 in Port Alberni, British Columbia, and grew up primarily in Victoria, B.C. and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
He developed a passion for writing around age twelve, initially experimenting with science fiction and fantasy genres influenced by Star Wars and Dungeons & Dragons.
At fourteen, he wrote a humorous short novel about a boy addicted to video games.
Through a family connection, the manuscript reached celebrated author Roald Dahl, who enjoyed it enough to pass it along to his literary agent.
The agent agreed to represent Oppel and successfully sold the story, launching his writing career.
