Michel Faber was born on April 13, 1960, in The Hague, Netherlands.
He emigrated to Australia with his parents in 1967, growing up in Melbourne suburbs and attending the University of Melbourne.
He studied Dutch, philosophy, rhetoric, and English literature, graduating in 1980.
After working various jobs including cleaning, he trained as a nurse in Sydney hospitals and worked in nursing until the mid-1990s.
In 1993, Faber, his second wife, and family emigrated to Scotland, where they continue to reside.
