Alex Shakar was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated from Yale University in 1990.
He pursued advanced studies as a Michener Fellow at the University of Texas before earning his Ph.D. in English and Creative Writing from the University of Illinois.
His career gained early recognition in 1996 when he won the National Fiction Competition and received Pick of the Year from Independent Presses for City in Love.
His novel The Savage Girl was named a New York Times Notable Book and a Book Sense Pick in 2001.
Shakar currently resides in Chicago, where he teaches fiction writing at the University of Illinois.
