Barrington Moore Jr. (1913–2005) was an American political sociologist renowned for his comparative approach to modernization and political development.
Educated at Williams College and Yale, where he earned his 1941 Ph.D. in sociology, Moore worked as a government policy analyst before embarking on an academic career at Chicago and later Harvard.
There he mentored influential scholars including Theda Skocpol and Charles Tilly.
His works, including Soviet Politics, Reflections on the Causes of Human Misery, and Injustice: The Social Basis of Obedience and Revolt, reflect a lifelong commitment to understanding power, suffering, and social change through rigorous historical and sociological analysis.
