Christa Wolf was an East German novelist, essayist, and critic, celebrated for her morally serious and narratively powerful work.
Born in 1929 in Landsberg an der Warthe, she moved to East Germany in 1945 and joined the Socialist Unity Party.
A committed socialist, she maintained a critical distance from the communist regime throughout her career.
Her most notable works include Divided Heaven (1963) and Cassandra (1983).
She received numerous literary awards, including the Thomas Mann Prize in 2010.
Wolf married essayist Gerhard Wolf in 1951, had two children, and died in December 2011.
