James Bryan Smith holds degrees from Yale Divinity School and Fuller Seminary.
He is a theology professor at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, where he also directs the Apprentis Institute for Christian Spiritual Formation.
A founding member of Richard J. Foster's Renovaré spiritual renewal ministry, Smith is an ordained United Methodist Church minister with extensive local church experience.
His other works include A Spiritual Formation Workbook, Devotional Classics (co-authored with Richard Foster), Embracing the Love of God, Rich Mullins: An Arrow Pointing to Heaven, and Room of Marvels.
