Louis V. Gerstner Jr. is best known for orchestrating one of history's greatest corporate turnarounds as IBM's chairman and CEO from 1993 to 2002.
Before IBM, he served as CEO of RJR Nabisco and held senior roles at American Express and McKinsey & Company.
Educated at Dartmouth College and Harvard Business School, Gerstner brought a non-technical yet strategically sharp perspective to IBM, revitalizing its culture, restructuring operations, and refocusing on services.
After retiring from IBM, he became chairman of The Carlyle Group in 2003, retiring from that role in 2008 while remaining a senior advisor.
