Robert N. Bellah was Elliott Professor of Sociology Emeritus at UC Berkeley.
He graduated summa cum laude from Harvard College in 1950 and received his Ph.D. in Sociology and Far Eastern Languages from Harvard in 1955.
His career focused on understanding modernity, religion, and society.
Major works include Beyond Belief, The Broken Covenant, and Religion in Human Evolution.
He received the National Humanities Medal in 2000 for illuminating the importance of community in American society and warning against unchecked individualism.
His scholarship spanned sociology of religion, civil religion, and comparative history.
Bellah passed away in 2013 at age 86.
