Tan Malaka (1894–1949) was a prominent Indonesian nationalist and communist leader whose life was defined by political conflict and exile.
A fierce critic of Dutch colonial rule and later of Sukarno's republican government, he also clashed with Indonesia's Communist Party leadership.
Despite spending much of his life as a fugitive, he played a vital intellectual role in connecting international communism with Southeast Asia's anti-colonial movements.
He authored influential works advocating for Indonesian independence and rational thinking.
Declared a "hero of the national revolution" by Indonesia's parliament in 1963, his legacy remains both celebrated and controversial.
