Tove Jansson (1914-2001) was a Finnish artist and writer from Helsinki's Swedish-speaking minority who wrote all her books in Swedish.
She considered herself equally an author and painter, never prioritizing one career over the other.
Jansson is internationally renowned for creating the beloved Moomintroll characters, beginning with The Moomins and the Great Flood (1945), written during World War II as an antidote to wartime depression.
Her Moomin books and picture books have been translated into 33 languages.
She spent summers on a Finnish island that inspired The Summer Book, written after her mother's death.
