1. Economic calculation is impossible without market prices for the means of production.

Where there is no market there is no price system, and where there is no price system there can be no economic calculation.

The calculation problem. Ludwig von Mises' central thesis is that a socialist commonwealth cannot calculate the costs and benefits of its economic decisions. In a free market, private ownership of the means of production allows for the exchange of capital goods, which in turn generates market prices. Without these prices, a central planning board has no compass to navigate the infinite possibilities of production, leading to a complete blind spot in resource allocation.

The illusion of calculation. Many socialists mistakenly believe that labor-time or calculations in kind can replace monetary calculation. However, these methods fail because they cannot account for the varying qualities of labor, the scarcity of natural resources, or the complex, multi-stage processes of modern production.

• Labor is not homogeneous; resolving skilled into simple labor requires arbitrary, non-economic decisions.
• Calculations in kind can only evaluate final consumption goods, leaving capital goods unappraised.
• Without a common denominator like money, comparing a ton of coal to a yard of cloth is impossible.

Inevitable economic chaos. Consequently, any attempt to run a society on purely socialist lines must result in the senseless operation of an irrational machine. While the central authority may know what it wants to produce, it can never determine the most economical way to achieve its goals. This leads to massive waste, capital depletion, and eventual societal collapse.

2. An artificial market cannot be simulated without private property and genuine risk.

The market is thus the focal point of the capitalist order of society; it is the essence of Capitalism. Only under Capitalism, therefore, is it possible; it cannot be ‘artificially’ imitated under Socialism.

The market's true engine. Some modern socialists propose creating an "artificial market" where state-appointed managers act as if they are competing entrepreneurs. This proposal overlooks the fundamental truth that the market is driven by the self-interest of property owners risking their own capital. Without the personal threat of financial loss and the allure of private profit, the competitive drive that optimizes resource allocation disappears.

Speculation cannot be bureaucratic. The core of economic progress is speculation—deciding where to invest capital for an uncertain future. In a capitalist system, this is done by capitalists who are financially responsible for their decisions.

• State-appointed managers do not risk their own wealth, making their decisions inherently less cautious.
• A socialist state cannot delegate the allocation of capital without giving up its socialist character.
• Bureaucratic committees naturally favor safe, stagnant routines over bold, innovative ventures.

The failure of proxy capitalism. Ultimately, trying to run a market without private property is like trying to play a game of poker without real stakes. The play-acting of bureaucratic managers cannot replicate the dynamic, wealth-creating forces of genuine capitalist enterprise.

3. Society is built on the peaceful division of labour, not on class conflict.

The division of labour is what first makes social ties: it is the social element pure and simple.

The unifying social bond. Society is fundamentally a cooperative venture built upon the division of labor. When individuals realize that specialized work is more productive than isolated self-sufficiency, they begin to view others as partners rather than competitors. This mutual dependence transforms potential enemies into collaborators, laying the groundwork for peace, law, and civilization.

The fallacy of class war. Marxism turns this harmony on its head by asserting that society is divided into irreconcilable classes locked in perpetual conflict. In reality, the market economy harmonizes the long-term interests of all participants.

• The interests of workers, capitalists, and landowners are complementary, not antagonistic.
• True conflicts of interest arise only when the state interferes with the market to grant special privileges.
• Class consciousness is an artificial ideology imposed from without, not a natural economic reality.

Cooperation over conflict. By preaching class warfare, Socialism threatens to dissolve the very division of labor that sustains modern populations. Only by recognizing the mutual benefits of social cooperation can humanity avoid a catastrophic slide back into primitive barbarism.

4. Capitalism is a consumers' democracy where every penny acts as a ballot.

When we call a capitalist society a consumers' democracy we mean that the power to dispose of the means of production, which belongs to the entrepreneurs and capitalists, can only be acquired by means of the consumers' ballot, held daily in the market-place.

The consumer is king. In a free market economy, the ultimate directors of production are the consumers. Through their daily decisions to buy or abstain from buying, they determine which businesses succeed and which fail. Entrepreneurs and capitalists are merely the consumers' mandatories, forced to align their production with the public's desires or face swift financial ruin.

The market ballot box. This system represents a highly responsive form of democracy where voting occurs continuously with every transaction. Unlike political democracy, where majorities can oppress minorities, the market democracy caters to diverse tastes simultaneously.

• Every penny spent is a vote that directly influences what goods are produced.
• Wealth can only be acquired and maintained by consistently serving the public's needs.
• The market quickly strips power from inefficient managers by inflicting losses on them.

True economic democracy. To demand "economic democracy" through state control or worker-managed guilds is to misunderstand the market's existing democratic nature. True economic democracy is not achieved by letting producers rule, but by preserving the absolute supremacy of the consumer.

5. Interventionism is an unstable third system that inevitably leads to full Socialism.

There is no third social system feasible which would be neither market economy nor socialism.

The illusion of the middle way. Many well-meaning reformers advocate interventionism—a "mixed economy" that attempts to retain the benefits of capitalism while regulating its supposed abuses. However, economic analysis reveals that isolated government interventions are self-defeating. They create unintended consequences that are worse, even in the eyes of their advocates, than the original problems they were meant to solve.

The slippery slope of price controls. Consider the example of price controls on a vital commodity like milk. If the government sets a price ceiling below the market rate to help the poor, producers will suffer losses and restrict supply, leading to shortages.

• To fix the shortage, the government must then control the prices of the inputs (fodder, labor, etc.).
• This forces the government to control the inputs of those inputs, cascading through the economy.
• Eventually, the state must control all prices, wages, and production, resulting in full socialism.

The inevitable choice. Thus, there is no stable middle ground between the free market and total state control. A nation must choose between the consumer-driven market economy and the government-driven planned economy; any attempt to compromise must logically end in totalitarianism.

6. Socialism is fundamentally a policy of destructionism and capital consumption.

Since a socialist order of society cannot exist, unless it be as a fragment of Socialism within an economic order resting otherwise on private property, each step leading towards Socialism must exhaust itself in the destruction of what already exists.

Living on inherited capital. Because a purely socialist economy cannot calculate and therefore cannot produce rationally, its operations are inherently destructive. It can only survive by consuming the capital accumulated by the capitalist system that preceded it. This policy of destructionism sacrifices the long-term future of society for short-term, politically popular consumption.

The illusion of prosperity. During the transition to Socialism, the consumption of capital is often masked by inflation and creative accounting. The state appears to provide wealth and security, but it is actually eating away at the seed corn of future generations.

• Capital goods are allowed to depreciate without being adequately replaced.
• Resources are diverted from highly productive private enterprises to inefficient state projects.
• The standard of living temporarily rises or stabilizes, hiding the underlying decay.

The end of civilization. Once the inherited capital is fully consumed, the economic system collapses, leading to widespread poverty, depopulation, and a return to primitive, hand-to-mouth existence. Socialism does not build a new civilization; it merely parasitizes and destroys the old one.

7. The trade union weapon of compulsory strikes is inherently anti-social and destructive.

The solidarity of the members of the trade union can be founded only on the idea of a war to destroy the social order based on private ownership in the means of production.

The anti-social nature of unions. Trade unions are widely regarded as benevolent organizations designed to protect workers from exploitation. However, their primary weapon—the strike enforced by compulsory unionism and violence—is fundamentally anti-social. By preventing non-union workers from taking jobs and halting vital services, unions act as monopolistic cartels that extort privileges at the expense of the rest of society.

The wage fallacy. Economic theory demonstrates that trade unions cannot permanently raise real wages for all workers. Wages are determined by the marginal productivity of labor, which depends on capital accumulation, not on union coercion.

• Artificial wage increases in one sector force up prices, harming workers as consumers.
• High union wages restrict employment, creating a permanent class of unemployed outsiders.
• Union violence undermines the rule of law, replacing peaceful cooperation with the rule of force.

A threat to social order. When unions in vital industries like transport or utilities strike, they hold the entire community hostage. A society that tolerates such violent coercion abdicates its authority, paving the way for anarchy or dictatorial intervention to restore order.

8. Inflationism and confiscatory taxation are the ultimate tools of economic ruin.

Inflation is the last word in destructionism.

The destruction of money. Inflation is often used by governments as a convenient way to finance public spending without raising taxes openly. However, by depreciating the currency, inflation destroys the very basis of economic calculation. It distorts prices, makes business accounting impossible, and leads to the silent, unnoticed consumption of capital.

Confiscation through taxation. Hand in hand with inflation goes progressive and confiscatory taxation. Under the guise of social justice, high taxes on income and capital are levied to fund the expanding welfare state, which further cripples the incentive to save and invest.

• High taxes penalize the most successful and productive entrepreneurs.
• Capital is diverted from wealth-creating investments to tax-avoidance schemes.
• The formation of new capital is halted, stagnating the real wages of the working class.

The path to collapse. Together, inflation and confiscatory taxation act as a powerful pincer movement that grinds down the capitalist economy. They destroy the middle class, wipe out savings, and create an economic crisis that the state invariably uses as an excuse for further totalitarian control.

9. Despotism and planning are structurally incompatible with personal liberty and democracy.

In a country where the sole employer is the State, opposition means death by slow starvation.

The death of liberty. The advocates of a planned economy often promise that state control of production can coexist with personal and political freedom. This is a tragic delusion. When the state owns all the means of production, it becomes the sole employer, the sole landlord, and the sole publisher. Under such conditions, any real opposition to the government becomes practically impossible.

The total state. Personal liberty cannot exist without economic freedom. If the state controls all resources, it controls the material means necessary to exercise basic human rights.

• Freedom of the press is meaningless if the state owns all printing presses and paper.
• Freedom of assembly is impossible if the state owns all meeting halls.
• Freedom of career choice is replaced by state-directed labor conscription.

The dictatorial reality. Totalitarian planning necessarily requires a dictator to resolve the conflicting plans of millions of individuals. Democracy and the rule of law must be suspended to ensure the uninterrupted execution of the state's master plan, turning the citizens into mere cogs in a bureaucratic machine.
