Sajaki, disguised to blend in with the Resurgam colonists, reports back to the Nostalgia for Infinity. He reveals that the colony is in turmoil after a recent coup, with Sylveste imprisoned by the new regime. Sajaki's mission is to extract Sylveste, but the political landscape is complex, with factions vying for control. The capital, Cuvier, has been devastated by explosions, and the True Path Inundationists, responsible for the coup, are fragmented. Sajaki navigates this chaos, using his Ultra resources to gather intelligence and plan Sylveste's extraction.

Khouri's infiltration and Sun Stealer

Khouri confesses to Volyova that she was planted on the ship by another crew seeking the cache-weapons. Her mission was to assess the state of Sun Stealer, a military virus designed to drive the crew mad. However, the virus was too powerful and adaptive, leading to the rogue weapon incident. Khouri's revelation forces Volyova to conceal this information from the rest of the crew, knowing Sajaki would blame her for the security breach. Despite the betrayal, Khouri's actions during the crisis saved Volyova's life, creating a complex dynamic between them.

Sylveste's Captivity and Revelation

Sylveste, held captive by Sluka's faction, learns of a mysterious ship in orbit around Resurgam. He suspects it belongs to the Ultras who kidnapped him years ago, seeking his expertise to repair their Captain. Sylveste reveals to Sluka that these Ultras possess planet-destroying weapons and are likely after him. He shares his fears with Pascale, his wife, during a brief reunion, realizing that their captors may soon have a use for him. With Khouri's help, she attempts to stop it, but the weapon is controlled by Sun Stealer, a rogue entity within the gunnery. Volyova uses the spider-room to drag the weapon into the ship's propulsion beam, destroying it. The incident forces her to cover up the damage and conceal the truth from Sajaki and the crew. Volyova's actions highlight the precarious balance of power and trust within the Triumvirate.

The Inhibitors' Ancient War

Revelation of a galactic conflict

Khouri experiences a memory implant revealing the Inhibitors, an ancient machine-chimeric species that emerged from a galaxy-wide war. The Inhibitors' purpose is to prevent the rise of other intelligent species, ensuring their own survival. This revelation explains the urgency of Sylveste's death, as his knowledge could threaten the Inhibitors' plans. Khouri's understanding of the Inhibitors' motives adds a new layer of complexity to her mission, as she grapples with the moral implications of her actions.

Intrigue and manipulation aboard ship

As the Nostalgia for Infinity orbits Resurgam, the crew navigates a web of deception and hidden agendas. Sajaki's mission to capture Sylveste is complicated by the political chaos on the planet. Volyova and Khouri must conceal the truth about Sun Stealer and the rogue weapon from the rest of the crew. The arrival of the mysterious ship and the revelation of the Inhibitors' existence add layers of intrigue and danger. The crew's survival depends on their ability to outmaneuver both internal and external threats.

Sajaki's Calculated Manipulation

Sajaki's hidden motives are revealed

As the crew of the Nostalgia for Infinity navigates the complexities of their mission, it becomes clear that Triumvir Sajaki's intentions are not as straightforward as they seem. His obsession with the Captain's recovery is not just about loyalty; it's about maintaining control. Sajaki's reluctance to fully heal the Captain suggests a deeper, more sinister agenda. He manipulates the crew and Sylveste, ensuring that the quest to save the Captain remains just out of reach, thus preserving his own power. Deep within Cerberus, Sylveste encounters a mysterious jewel-like structure and a portal of blinding light. As he approaches, he is overwhelmed by a profound understanding: the light is a gateway into a vast computational matrix, a remnant of an ancient civilization. This matrix, housed within what was once a neutron star, processes information at an unimaginable scale. Sylveste realizes that the Inhibitor device, left by a long-extinct race, was designed to lure and study intelligent life, potentially triggering their destruction. Despite the danger, Sylveste is compelled to enter the jewel, driven by a need to understand and confront the legacy of the Amarantin and the Inhibitors.

The Captain's Secret

Volyova's revelation about the Captain

As the Nostalgia for Infinity faces imminent destruction, Volyova makes a desperate decision to unleash the Melding Plague, allowing the Captain's consciousness to spread throughout the ship. She reveals that the Captain had once transferred his mind into Sajaki, effectively living a dual existence. This revelation explains Sajaki's actions and his reluctance to heal the Captain. Volyova hopes that by allowing the Captain to take control, he can counteract Sun Stealer's influence and save the ship. Her gamble pays off as the ship's systems begin to stabilize, suggesting the Captain's presence is now dominant.

Khouri's Unexpected Resurrection

Khouri awakens on Hades

After the spider-room's destruction, Khouri finds herself inexplicably alive on the surface of Hades. She learns from Pascale Sylveste, who appears in a new form, that they have been reconstructed by the matrix within Hades. This matrix, a vast computational entity, has preserved their consciousness and bodies, allowing them to exist in a simulated reality. Khouri grapples with the implications of her resurrection and the knowledge that she is now part of a larger, incomprehensible system. Despite the strangeness of her situation, she is determined to find a way back to the real world.

Volyova's Desperate Gamble

Volyova's risky plan to save the ship

Faced with the threat of Sun Stealer, Volyova takes a drastic step by allowing the Melding Plague to spread unchecked, hoping the Captain's consciousness can regain control of the ship. Her plan is a success, as the ship's systems begin to stabilize, and Sun Stealer's influence wanes. Volyova's actions highlight her willingness to take extreme measures to protect her crew and the mission. Her gamble not only saves the ship but also provides a glimmer of hope for Khouri and the others stranded on Hades.

The Inhibitor's True Purpose

The Inhibitor device's role revealed

Sylveste learns that the Inhibitor device was designed to monitor and potentially eliminate intelligent life that posed a threat to the galaxy. The device, left by an ancient civilization, was meant to lure and study emerging species, determining their potential for conflict. Sylveste's presence in the device triggers its mechanisms, but he manages to avoid activating its destructive protocols. This revelation underscores the galaxy's history of conflict and the lengths to which ancient civilizations went to prevent future wars. Sylveste's understanding of the Inhibitor's purpose shapes his actions and decisions as he navigates the challenges ahead.

A New Beginning on Hades

Khouri and Pascale's new reality

On Hades, Khouri and Pascale find themselves in a recreated world, a simulation of Resurgam as it once was.
