Thomas Merton fue un monje trapense, escritor y teólogo estadounidense que vivió de 1915 a 1968.
Ingresó en la Abadía de Gethsemani en 1941 y fue ordenado sacerdote en 1949.
Merton escribió más de 50 libros sobre espiritualidad, justicia social y pacifismo, siendo su autobiografía "La montaña de los siete círculos" un éxito de ventas.
Fue un pionero en el diálogo interreligioso, explorando religiones orientales y relacionándose con destacados líderes espirituales asiáticos.
