دیوید فاستر والاس نویسنده‌ای برجسته و شناخته‌شده در آمریکا بود که به خاطر رمان‌ها، مقالات و داستان‌های کوتاهش شهرت یافت.
او به خاطر سبک نوشتاری پیچیده و نوآورانه‌اش و همچنین مشاهدات دقیقش از زندگی معاصر آمریکایی مورد توجه قرار گرفت.
آثار والاس اغلب به بررسی موضوعاتی چون اعتیاد، افسردگی و وضعیت انسانی می‌پرداخت.
او جوایز متعددی از جمله کمک‌هزینه «نابغه» مک‌آرتور را دریافت کرد.
با وجود موفقیت‌هایش، والاس در طول زندگی‌اش با مشکلات سلامت روان دست و پنجه نرم کرد.
او در کالج پومونا تدریس نوشتن می‌کرد و به عنوان یکی از تأثیرگذارترین نویسندگان نسل خود شناخته می‌شد.
متأسفانه، والاس در سال 2008 در سن 46 سالگی جان خود را گرفت و میراثی از ادبیات تأثیرگذار و اندیشه‌برانگیز از خود به جا گذاشت.
