William James Durant je bil ameriški pisatelj, zgodovinar in filozof, najbolj znan po soavtorstvu enajstdelne serije "Zgodovina civilizacije" skupaj z ženo Ariel.
Rojen leta 1885, je sprva zasledoval kariero v novinarstvu, nato pa se posvetil filozofiji in zgodovini.
Njegova knjiga iz leta 1926, "Zgodba o filozofiji", je postala uspešnica in pripomogla k popularizaciji filozofije med širšo javnostjo.
Skupno delo z Ariel na "Zgodovini civilizacije" je trajalo štiri desetletja in jima prineslo številne nagrade, med njimi Pulitzerjevo nagrado za literaturo leta 1967 ter Predsedniško medaljo svobode leta 1977.
Durantov slog pisanja je bil znan po svoji dostopnosti in sposobnosti, da zapletene zgodovinske in filozofske teme predstavi širokemu krogu bralcev.
