I had used coding to make something, and people beyond my family or my friends or my teachers were finding it and enjoying it.

Coding as a creative tool. Learning to code gives girls a powerful way to express themselves and bring their ideas to life. Through coding, they can create websites, apps, and games that reach a global audience. This allows them to share important messages and make an impact on issues they care about.

Building confidence. As girls learn coding skills and see their creations come to life, it boosts their confidence. They realize they have the ability to build something from nothing and solve complex problems. This newfound confidence often translates to other areas of their lives.

Opening doors. Coding skills open up many opportunities in the tech industry and beyond. Girls who code gain highly sought-after technical abilities that can lead to internships, jobs, and entrepreneurial ventures. Learning to code empowers girls to pursue careers in STEM fields where women are underrepresented.

2. Overcoming fear and self-doubt is key to personal growth and success

I had put myself and my needs on the table. I had spoken up, and it paid off.

Facing fears head-on. Growth happens when we push past our comfort zones and face our fears. Whether it's public speaking, sharing creative work, or trying something new, confronting fears helps build resilience and confidence.

Reframing negative self-talk. Self-doubt often stems from negative internal dialogue. Learning to recognize and reframe these thoughts is crucial. Instead of "I can't do this," try "This is challenging, but I can learn."

Taking small steps. Overcoming fear and self-doubt is a gradual process. Start with small challenges and build up to bigger ones. Each small success helps build the confidence needed to tackle larger obstacles.

3. Collaboration and support from others enhances creativity and achievement

We inspired each other, feeding off each other's ideas, humor, and unique ways of seeing the world.

Complementary skills. Collaboration brings together diverse skills and perspectives. When people with different strengths work together, they can create something greater than the sum of its parts.

Mutual support and accountability. Partners provide encouragement during challenges and celebrate successes together. Having someone to be accountable to can also increase motivation and productivity.

4. The tech industry needs more diversity and female representation

Although the gender imbalance in the industry is a major problem, it's also one that most tech companies recognize and are trying to address.

Current state of diversity. The tech industry remains predominantly male, especially in technical and leadership roles. This lack of diversity can lead to products and services that don't adequately consider the needs of diverse users.

6. Balancing ambition with personal fulfillment is an ongoing challenge

I knew that to achieve anything great you have to make sacrifices and you have to work extremely hard—but at what cost?

Defining personal success. It's important to reflect on what success means individually, beyond societal expectations. This may involve balancing career achievements with personal relationships, health, and hobbies.

Setting boundaries. Learn to say no to opportunities that don't align with core values or long-term goals. Prioritize tasks and delegate when possible to avoid burnout.

Regular reassessment. Periodically evaluate if current pursuits are still fulfilling and aligned with personal values. Be willing to adjust course as needed to maintain balance and satisfaction.

7. Sharing ideas publicly, though scary, can create positive change

There was a real thrill to it. Most of the audience members were eager to hear and talk about menstruation and the taboo precisely because they'd always felt awkward around the subject.

Breaking taboos. Sharing ideas about uncomfortable topics can help normalize important conversations. This can lead to greater understanding and positive social change.

Inspiring others. When people share their ideas and experiences publicly, it can inspire others to do the same. This creates a ripple effect of openness and dialogue.

Personal growth. The act of sharing ideas publicly, despite fear, builds confidence and communication skills. It helps individuals become more comfortable with vulnerability and authenticity.

Creating community. Sharing ideas often leads to connections with like-minded individuals. This can result in supportive communities and collaborations around shared interests or causes.
